Vathennie, A Rising Singing Star #video
It is said one is born with a singing voice and also the belief that a good singer or dancer was previously a denizen of Ghandarvaloka (celestial planet of artists).
The practical understanding is that a good guru, regular practise, and supportive parents maketh a maestro.
Seeing a video of Vathennie Vasudevan, 14, sing the Thevaram at a Temple of Fine Arts Navarathri performance convinces us that all the above observations apply in explaining her remarkable talent.
Vathennie is a student of carnatic music at the Temple of Fine Arts Kuala Lumpur. She is currently training under Patmajothi Ganeshvaran (vocal, thevaram) and Suba (carnatic vocals).
During the 15 minute Thevaram recital she performed six songs. She was accompanied by violinist Abrami and Mirugandum player Akhil.
Vathennie is also learning to play the violin under top carnatic violinist Gayathari Vadivel at the Vivekananda Asharam.
She began learning carnatic vocals at the age of four under Patmajothi and had taken part in many music camps.
She was named the top vocalist during the Carnatic Stars 2014 competition organised by the Vijayratnam foundation.
She had joined the foundation’s classes conducted by the renowed carnatic vocalist O.S Arun for 40 students over a three month period. The classes culminated in a two hour performance with a top vocal student being named at the end of the recital.
Vathennie has also won several Hindu Sangam Tirumurai competitions at district and state levels.
Vathennie has the makings of a great singer and we hope she is given every support in her effort to master this divine artform and put Malaysia on the world Carnatic music arena.
