By Prof. Venkateswaran Somasundram.
I am very pleased to enclose the video links for the concert performed for Nada Tanum, New Zealand and Carnatica, India on the occasion of their Fifth Global Heritage Music Festival – Pacific Rim 2025. The concert was webcast on 2 January 2025.
My co-artistes were Kalaimamani Dr. Usha Rajagopalan on the violin, Shri Aditya Rajkumar on the mridangam and Vidwan Madipakkam Murali on the ghatam.
The concert commenced with a Muthuswamy Dikshitar krithi on Lord Vinayaka, “Vathapi Ganapathim”, Raga Hamsadwani, Tala Adi. This was followed by the Thyagarajaswamy krithi, “Marugelara” in Raga Jayanthasri, Tala Adi.
The Shyama Sastri krithi, “Shankari Shankuru Chandramukhi” in Raga Saveri, Tala Adi (Thisra Gathi), was performed in praise of Goddess Akhilandeswari.
Usha played a very melodious and traditional alapana of Raga Kamas which was followed by the popular Papanasam Sivan composition “Idathu Patham Thooki” in Tala Adi.
The Thyagarajaswamy krithi “Jutha Murare” in Raga Arabhi, Tala Rupakam, that followed was rendered in praise of Lord Ranganatha.
The main item of the concert was the Thyagarajaswamy krithi “Adamodi Galade” in Raga Charukesi, Tala Adi. Usha played a very soulful alapana of the raga, effectively bringing out the sangeetha sampradaya and the raga lakshanas in a purely traditional manner.
The Guru Surajanandha krithi, “Muruganin Marupeyar Azhagu” in Raga Behag, Tala Kanda Chapu, rendered in praise of Lord Muruga brought out the qualities of lavanya (beauty) in Lord Muruga and how He protects His devotees.
The concluding item of the concert was the Madurai Srinivasan krithi “Karunai Deivame Karpagame” in Raga Sindhu Bhairavi, Tala Adi. This was followed by Mangalam (Valediction).
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Nada Tanum and to Carnatica, particularly to Shri Mani Narayanaswamy and Vidwan K.N. Shashikiran, for their support and encouragement.
